What items have you ever used as a bookmark? What is the most unusual item you’ve ever used or seen used?
Don’t forget to leave a link to your actual response (so people don’t have to go searching for it) in the comments—or if you prefer, leave your answers in the comments themselves!
I tend to misplace bookmarks, which I feel terrible about since most of mine were gifts from people who know about my reading addiction. I usually only have one actual bookmark in my possession at a time and if I’m reading multiple books at once that means I have to scrounge around looking for substitutions.
The most common un-bookmarks I use are shopping receipts (which serves a dual purpose since I usually lose those too), airline tickets, concert ticket stubs, and bills. I’ve also used magnets, post-its, Christmas cards, pretty much anything I can find in front of me on my coffee table (which is usually filled with clutter).
What about you?

I use anything that comes handy, including many you have mentioned. 🙂

Yes, I have that same coffee table clutter problem! My bookmarks tend to disappear there.

I think my coffee table is actually a black hole. I’m thinking of contacting NASA. 🙂

I tend to use whatever is handy at the time and I can relate to the coffee table clutter!

I’ve had the same bookmark for the last five years – a ticket stub from a Marquette basketball game. It’s been through dozens and dozens of books with me now, and maybe it’s a bit obsessive-compulsive of me, but I can’t imagine starting a new book without it! 😉

That’s actually really impressive!

well I have bookmarks, but when I run out (as I read more than one book at a time) I get stickers, or if they’re library books, the receipt with the due date, that way I remember when it’s due 😛 I will NEVER dogear my pages, that actually is a huge pet peeve of mine and if people do that to my books I go haywire and ballistic.

I’m really picky when it comes to letting people borrow my books. If they crack the spine or bend the pages I get really upset!

Shoping receipt is my emergency bookmark.
I have my own special bookmark…I feel incomplete reading without it. You can see it in my BTT’s post 😉

I have a used book store and have found these things and more. Photos are very popular, small maps, business cards, note cards, a rabies tag, shoelaces, an earring, and oddly, pages from other books (more often than you’d think).
Personally, I use several of my business cards (bookmarks, of course) so they’re always handy for other readers without a place keeper…

I get quite a few books from bookcrossing and they usually have a postcard tucked in there so I like to use those as bookmarks. The weirdest thing I think I’ve ever used was a knitting needle. I was reading late at night, couldn’t find a bookmark of the usual variety and so in my half asleep stupor used a knitting needle. Gave me a giggle the next morning 🙂

Lol, a knitting needle? What’s bookcrossing?

I make bookmarks, so I have an insane amount of them. I have a huge mug full of them sitting on a bookshelf, with ones for whatever mood or obsession I may be in at the moment… so really I don’t use anything but bookmarks. I’d be hard pressed to loose them all!

Cool! How do you make them?

I work in desktop publishing, so I have graphics experience. I use images from whatever I’m obsessing over at the moment, and then print them in colour and laminate them. I just made a big batch to give at Christmas – friends favorite TV shows, hockey teams, people & places.

Jody – that’s awesome! I wish I was more artistically inclined so I could make some cool graphics for my blog.
